Chapter 17

The weather was partly cloudy and humid, but Tanya was glad it hadn’t started to rain yet. James had phoned her at work a couple of hours ago, just as he’d said he would, and she’d agreed to meet him at a park over in a suburb not too far from where he lived. She’d sort of thought twice about going, but she hadn’t hesitated for very long, because she really did want to see him. She’d tried to deny her feelings for the sake of doing the right thing, but before she’d known it, she’d asked him what time she should be there. And he’d told her somewhere around twelve thirty.

She drove through the winding pavement, searching for the spot he’d given her directions to, and soon she spied his black BMW. Then she saw him sitting a few feet away under a shade tree at a picnic table.

Tanya cracked her windows before leaving her vehicle and strolled over to where James was waiting for her.

“So you made it,” he said.

“Yeah, I did.”

“It wasn’t hard to find, was it?”

“No. Your directions were perfect,” she said, sitting down next to him.

He stared at her and didn’t say anything.

“What?” she asked, wanting to know what the problem was.

“Your husband must be completely out of his mind,” he commented, and looked away from her.

“Why?”

“Because no man in his right mind would treat a woman like you the way he does. I mean, what more could a man ask for when he has a beautiful, caring wife? I know that sounds like some sort of line, but I’m just calling it the way I see it.”

“Most people never want what they have, and you know the grass always seems just a little greener somewhere else.”

“I guess, but I still don’t understand it.”

Tanya wasn’t sure what to say.

“So,” James said. “When do you have to be back at work?”

“In a couple of hours. I have a lot to do, but I can stay a little later this evening to take care of it.”

“I thought about picking up a couple of sandwiches, but I figured we could stroll through the park and pick up something at one of the food trucks.”

“That’s fine.”

“You want to go now?” he asked.

“Whenever you’re ready.”

They walked a good ways to the first truck they saw and James purchased two hot dogs, two bags of chips, and some lemonade. Then they found a much more secluded table, sat down next to each other, and ate.

“So, aren’t you glad you came?” James asked her.

“I am. I won’t even lie to you.”

“I thought about you all morning, and I would have done anything to take you home with me last night.”

“I know, but I just couldn’t do that.”

“What about now?” he asked, smiling.

Tanya laughed at him. “I agreed to meet you for lunch and lunch only, remember?”

“Well, you can’t blame me for trying.”

“Goodness. You give a person some rope, and then they wanna be a cowboy.”

They both laughed.

“This is a nice park, and I never would have noticed it,” Tanya said.
